Cords and claws wear with use, like the laces on your cleats. Normal wear isn't a defect.

1 · Strap in the ball

Pump the ball to the pressure printed by the valve. Lay the holder flat like a star, print side down, and set the ball in the middle. Close the claws in star order, 1-3-5-2-4, each one flat and tight. About ten minutes the first time, a minute after that.

2 · Clip and go

Put the belt on snug at your waist and clip the cord on at the front, so the slack stays in front of you.

3 · Pass · First touch · Again

On grass or turf, with about 20 ft (6 m) clear in front of you, pass it along the ground with the inside of your foot. The cord brings the ball back toward your feet. Take your first touch and pass again.

How not to get hit: keep it on the ground, strike through the middle of the ball and stay at half power or less. The harder you kick it, the harder it comes back. Turn 90° at most so the cord doesn't wrap around your legs.

Inside? Soft ground passes and sole work only, on carpet or a mat, with nothing breakable within 10 ft (3 m).

Never played? You don't need to coach. Once a week, film 10 seconds from the side in slow motion and check two things: is the plant foot pointing where the pass goes, and is the ankle locked? Compare it with last week's clip.

Club gave touch homework? Every pass and every first touch goes in your Touch Count. Write the number down after each session.

Questions players and parents ask

Only the Kit comes without one. It's made for the size 5 ball you already play with, the size used in high school and adult soccer. The five claws wrap around the ball and close with hook-and-loop tabs. Need a ball, or buying it as a gift? Pick Kit + Ball, which comes with 1 Kit and 1 size 5 soccer ball. The 2-Pack comes with 2 Kits and 2 balls.

Got a good wall you can use? Use it. A wall gives a real rebound, and we won't pretend otherwise. But for a lot of families the only wall is the garage door, the park and the field don't have one, and after dark it's off-limits. TrainerOne is the wall you can take anywhere. Pass it on the ground, it comes back to your feet, and a heavy touch doesn't send you chasing it down the street.

Why it matters: in a 2025 study of pro academy players, a game gave each player about one touch per minute. The passing and first-touch reps have to come from somewhere.

Source: Escreet et al., PLOS ONE (2025)

It can, so here's how to avoid it. The harder you kick it, the harder it comes back. Pass it on the ground with the inside of your foot, through the middle of the ball, at about half power. A pass on the ground comes back on the ground. No full-power shots and no lofted balls, and if one ever comes back high, get your hands up. Keep people and pets out of the cord's path, and wear shin guards for striking drills.

Like any elastic trainer, it wears with use. The cord and the claws take the load on every pass. To make it last, use it on grass or turf, not concrete or asphalt, skip the full-power shots, keep it out of the sun and check it before each session. On turf, brush the turf pellets off the claws. If the cord looks nicked or a claw starts to tear, stop using it.

It can, and here's how to keep it clear. Clip the cord on at the front, not behind you. Turn 90 degrees at most, never a full spin, and turn back the way you came. Keep the slack in front of you, never between your feet. If the cord twists, unclip it, lay it out straight and turn the ball until it stops twisting. And skip the curl on your passes, because spin twists the cord.

Fair question. You can find a cheaper belt, and we won't pretend otherwise. What you get here is the trainer plus a plan. The Kit comes with First Touch Quick Start, a free 29-page guide with setup, 6 first drills, a 7-day plan and the 10-Pass Test. Kit + Ball and the 2-Pack come with The First Touch Playbook, 53 pages with 34 drills and 4 plans.

For comparison, even the cheapest private lesson we found costs more than the Kit: $35 an hour at a public parks district in Oregon. At Asphalt Green in New York it's $100 an hour. Sources: Willamalane Parks · Asphalt Green

If it arrives damaged, we replace it. Unopened orders can be returned within 90 days of delivery, and Kit + Ball and the 2-Pack ship free in the US.

It's designed for teen and adult players, 13 and up: club, high school, rec and adult league. Every position passes and receives with the inside of the foot, so it works for all of them: center backs and midfielders get passing and first-touch reps, wingers and forwards get weak-foot reps, and keepers get catching and scooping reps. It uses a size 5 ball, the size high school and adult players use.

The belt is worn snug at your waist. We'll publish the exact waist range in inches once we've measured it ourselves. Until then, check the fit on day 1, before you play, and if it doesn't close around your waist, contact us.

Buying it as a gift and not sure what position they play? It works for every one of them. Keep it sealed until you're sure they don't already have one. Unopened returns are accepted within 90 days of delivery, so an order today stays returnable past the holidays.

No, and we'd rather tell you now. With the ball tied to your waist, full-power shots snap back, heading isn't safe, and skill moves and 180° turns wrap the cord around your legs. It won't teach decisions, scanning or beating a defender either. That's what practice and games are for.

It's built for passing with the inside of your foot, first touch, your weak foot and keeper handling. Volleys, laces and sole work are fine if you keep them soft, at half power. Juggling works for learning, but set your record without it. For full-power shooting, use a goal and a net.

The game gives you about one touch a minute

The extra touches are up to you · And the garage door takes the hits

A player walks after a ball that bounced off a scuffed garage door at dusk

Every return is a first touch

Pass it on the ground · The cord brings it back along the same line

10 passes · 20 touches · We call it The First Touch Loop

Build the touch here, use it on game day. What it trains: passing with the inside, first touch, your weak foot, head up between touches and keeper handling. What it doesn't: full-power shots, heading, skill moves and spins, long balls and crosses, keeper dives
