Cords and straps wear with use, like the laces on her court shoes. Normal wear isn't a defect.

    How it works

1 · Strap in her ball

Wrap the five straps around her volleyball so they meet at the hub and hug the ball.

    2 · Clip and go

Put the belt on at her waist and clip the cord to it.

    3 · Toss · Serve · Catch

She serves. The cord stops the ball and brings it back toward her. She catches it and tosses again.

How not to get hit: serve forward and up, keep her eyes on the ball and catch it at waist height on the way back. Start with easy swings.

      FAQs

Does it come with a volleyball?

Only the Kit comes without one. The Kit is made for the volleyball she already plays with: any standard official-size volleyball. The five straps wrap around the ball and meet at the hub. If she needs a ball, or it's a gift, pick Kit + Ball: 1 Kit and 1 ball. The 2-Pack comes with 2 Kits and 2 balls.

Why not just use a wall?

If she has a wall she can hit, great. Use it for passing. For serving, USA Volleyball's solo drill calls for a wall and about 30 ft (9 m) of space, and for a lot of families that wall is the house. With TrainerOne the ball stays tied to her waist. After every swing it comes back to her, ready for the next toss, and the windows stay out of it.

Will the ball come back and hit her face?

It can if she swings straight up or loses sight of the ball, so here's how to avoid it: serve forward and up, keep her eyes on the ball and catch it at waist height on the way back. Start with easy swings until she knows how the cord brings it back. Keep people and pets out of the cord's path.

Will the cord or the straps break?

Like any elastic trainer, it wears with use. The cord and the straps take the load on every serve. To make it last, keep the cord off sharp edges and rough ground, store it out of the sun and check it before each session. If it looks nicked or worn, stop using it.

Arrived damaged or defective? Tell us within 48 hours of delivery with a photo and we'll replace it or refund you.

Does the cord get in the way of her toss?

When she serves, the cord hangs from her waist, below her swing. It's about 6 ft (1.8 m) at rest and stretches as the ball goes out. Have her toss a little in front of her hitting shoulder and let the cord hang loose. For jump serves we don't recommend it yet.

Why $29.95 when I've seen cheaper belts?

Fair question. Cheaper belts exist, and we won't pretend they don't. For $29.95 she gets a five-strap holder made for a standard volleyball, an elastic cord about 6 ft (1.8 m) at rest and an adjustable belt, plus straight answers on this page about what it trains and what it doesn't.

If it arrives damaged, we replace it. Unopened orders can be returned within 90 days of delivery, and Kit + Ball and the 2-Pack ship free in the US.

      Who is it for?

It's designed for teen and adult players. The belt adjusts to fit her waist.

Buying it as a gift? Keep it sealed until you're sure she doesn't already have one. Unopened returns are accepted within 90 days of delivery, so an order today stays returnable past the holidays.

Can she practice passing or setting with it?

No, and we'd rather tell you now. With the ball tied to her waist, passing and setting don't work the way they do on the court. It's built for her serve and her arm swing: the toss, the swing and the contact. For passing she needs a partner, a coach or a wall.

      It's not her talent

It's how few serves she gets

One 2-hour practice: fewer than 600 touches for the whole team · USA Volleyball

A volleyball player walks after her ball on the driveway at dusk, in front of a garage door marked by ball hits

Every serve starts with the toss

Most missed serves come from an inconsistent toss · USA Volleyball

The Serve Loop brings the ball back so she can toss again

What the TrainerOne volleyball serve trainer trains: serve toss, arm swing for serve and spike, clean contact and serving reps at home. What it doesn't: passing, setting, jump approach and where the serve lands

For her and everyone in the stands

Tryouts coming up · The serve is the skill they test most · JVA

Fighting for minutes · Her serve can't wait for gym time
